Moon Balloon® Training: Using Images to Communicate Feelings
June 19-21, 2008
Joan and Liz presented the Moon Balloon® Training using images to communicate feelings to 30 grief professionals at Bo’s Place for CEU certificates. An interactive PowerPoint presentation and sample drawing techniques were taught to help the professionals to use the Moon Balloon® process more effectively with grieving families.
Bo's Place is founded on the belief that it is helpful and healing for grieving children to share their memories, grief experiences, thoughts and feelings with other grieving children. Bo's Place offers the only free ongoing program for grieving children and their families in the greater Houston area.

"I thought the Moon Balloon® and Self Care Training helped all of us to express and recognize our feelings or situations. We often do not notice what is going on in our body and mind. The best thing is that it is easy to use- just paper, pens, crayons or pastels, and our souls. I will use this great tool. Thank you for the opportunity to have this impressive training it was priceless."

Moon Balloon® Workshop for Children and Families
April 22, 2008
The mission of The Children's Room is to provide a safe and caring place where grieving children, teens, and families can receive peer support and the guidance of trained volunteers. The Children's Room enables these families to express their grief and to adapt to the many changes that accompany the death. In addition, The Children's Room strives to educate the community that grieving is an important part of life and is essential to an individual's ongoing growth and development.
Excerpt from The Children's Room e-newsletter Lionheart: the Latest from The Children's Room-
We had a fun and creative healing workshop one April afternoon, led by author/illustrator Joan Drescher.
Kids at The Children's Room helped co-author a story on the spot. Joan used simple drawings to represent the personal experiences told to her by the kids in this interactive workshop. She drew big balloons -- shy balloons, sad balloons, happy balloons -- and created illustrations of the children themselves in the balloon baskets, flying through the sky on various healing adventures!
Joan has years of experience leading healing arts workshops for children, and she is currently the Artist in Residence at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children. We feel very lucky and enormously grateful that Joan shared her talents as an artist and communicator with children from our program.
As Joan Borysenko says, "The Moon Balloon® is a wonderful way of allowing children to access and give words to emotions."
